Arriving to Kenya
Do I need a visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Kenya?
All international travelers (except citizens of certain East African countries) must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling to Kenya. Apply online via the official portal at etakenya.go.ke at least 3–5 days in advance. The process is straightforward and costs around USD 30–34. You will need to present your eTA confirmation at check-in and upon arrival. A passport valid for at least 6 months with at least two blank pages is required.
What currency should I use? Cash or card?
The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).
Cash is still king for small purchases, taxis, tips, markets, and many restaurants. Carry small denomination notes (KES 50, 100, 200, 500).
Credit/debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, shopping malls, and conference venues.
ATMs are plentiful in secure locations (inside banks, malls, or the airport). Use them during daylight hours and prefer machines in well-lit, guarded areas.
Tip: Bring some USD cash as a backup — it can be exchanged at the airport or authorized bureaus at good rates. Consider a contactless multi-currency card for lower fees.
Mobile money (M-Pesa) is extremely popular locally but requires a Kenyan SIM card.
What type of power outlets and voltage are used?
Plug type: Type G (British-style three rectangular pins).
Voltage: 240V, 50 Hz.
Most modern devices only need a plug adapter. Many upscale hotels provide universal sockets.
Health and Safety
Is a Yellow Fever vaccination required?
Entry requirement: You must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from (or have transited for more than 12 hours through) a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
Recommendation: Even if not strictly required for entry into Nairobi, the vaccine is generally recommended for travelers over 9 months old if your itinerary includes areas outside Nairobi (e.g., safaris). Consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance.
Other routine vaccinations (hepatitis A & B, typhoid, rabies if appropriate, and up-to-date COVID-19/flu shots) are strongly advised. Malaria prophylaxis is usually not needed for Nairobi itself but may be recommended if you travel elsewhere
Is tap water safe to drink in Nairobi?
No — tap water in Nairobi is not recommended for drinking, brushing teeth, or making ice for international visitors due to potential bacterial contamination. Always use bottled water (widely available and inexpensive) or water provided by your hotel/conference venue (most provide filtered or bottled water). Avoid ice in drinks unless you are certain it is made from purified water.
How safe is Nairobi for conference attendees?
Nairobi is a busy modern city. Most conference delegates experience no issues when using common-sense precautions:
Stick to well-reviewed areas such as Westlands, Gigiri, Karen, Lavington, and the conference venue surroundings.
Avoid: Eastleigh, and informal settlements.
Use ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt — especially after dark.
Do not walk alone at night or display valuables.
Keep your hotel safe for passports and valuables.
Overall, with normal big-city vigilance, Nairobi is safe for business travelers.
What is the weather like in Nairobi during the conference?
Nairobi has a pleasant highland climate. Expect daytime temperatures of 20–26°C (68–79°F) and cooler nights (around 10–15°C / 50–59°F). April–May is part of the long rainy season, so bring a light rain jacket or umbrella. Rain is often in the afternoon or evening and rarely lasts all day. Pack layers.
Booking and accomodation
Flights from the USA to Nairobi (Avoiding Qatar and Dubai)
Best option – Direct flight: Kenya Airways operates the only non-stop flight from New York (JFK) to Nairobi (NBO). Flight duration is approximately 14–15 hours. This completely avoids any layovers in the Middle East.
One-stop options via Europe (recommended for other US cities):
New York / Boston / Washington / Chicago / Atlanta → Amsterdam (AMS) → Nairobi with KLM (or Delta/KLM codeshare).
New York / Boston / Washington → Paris (CDG) → Nairobi with Air France.
Various US cities → London (LHR) → Nairobi with British Airways.
Various US cities → Frankfurt (FRA) → Nairobi with Lufthansa.
These European connections typically involve one comfortable layover (2–4 hours) in a major European hub and avoid Qatar, Dubai, and other Gulf carriers.
Flights from the EUROPE to Nairobi (Avoiding Qatar and Dubai)
Direct flights (no layover needed):
London Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW) → Nairobi with British Airways or Kenya Airways.
Paris (CDG) → Nairobi with Air France or Kenya Airways.
Amsterdam (AMS) → Nairobi with KLM or Kenya Airways.
Frankfurt (FRA) → Nairobi with Lufthansa (seasonal or codeshare options available).
These direct flights take 8–10 hours depending on the city and provide the simplest, most reliable travel.
Booking tips
Book early, especially for conference dates, as availability can tighten.
Use flight comparison tools like Google Flights, Kayak, or Skyscanner, and filter out Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, and any routes with layovers in Doha (DOH) or Dubai (DXB).
Kenya Airways, KLM, Air France, British Airways, and Lufthansa are the primary carriers offering clean routes via Europe.
Total travel time from the US East Coast is typically 17–22 hours (including layover); from Europe it is 8–12 hours.
Always check the latest schedules directly with the airline, as routes can change.
